Short description:

The aim of the joint research project is to improve the modeling of the decontamination factor in pool scrubbing processes. Pool scrubbing describes the washout of aerosol-borne particles in water pools and is an important process for assessing the radioactive source term during severe accidents. The project combines experimental investigations, numerical simulations, and modeling activities to develop new and validated models for the description of the decontamination factor and to make them applicable in system codes.

IATF/KIT coordinates the joint project and focuses on bubble and particle transport in swarm flows, as well as on the development of a statistical DF model. In addition, PEV/TUD contributes investigations on bubble dynamics in the injection and transition zones, NML/UniBw M provides high-resolution DNS data on particle transport in single bubbles, and PSS/RUB develops an integral model for the entire pool scrubbing process and evaluates its application in plant-relevant scenarios.

Through the close integration of these activities, the predictive capability for pool scrubbing processes is to be improved, thereby contributing to the further development of reactor safety research.
