Research task

CFD modelling of bulk condensation of steam and fog transport inside a nuclear reactor containment

Motivation
The condensation of steam on cold structures and the formation of fog due to bulk condensation are of high safety relevance during a Beyond Design Basis Accident (BDBA) in a water-cooled nuclear reactor. The natural circulation and stratification in the containment atmosphere are influenced by condensation which in turn will affect the flammability of the gas mixture, the buoyancy driven turbulent heat and mass transport and the behaviour of aerosols.

Research Objective
To develop a numerical model to predict the fog formation, transport and interaction with other gases in the nuclear reactor containment atmosphere. The following aspects will be examined:

  • Different nucleation and condensation models
  • Transport of fog particles by drift and diffusion
